BRISBANE surgeon Dr Anthony Lynham is being touted for big things in Queensland politics should he win the Stafford by-election for the ALP but he won’t be handed the Opposition’s health portfolio, at least not if the current holder can help it.
Bundamba MP Jo-Ann Miller said she would not be handing over the portfolio to the maxillofacial surgeon and anti-violence campaigner, who will be the only medic on the team should he win.
She summed it up with one word, no.
Opposition Leader Annastacia Palaszczuk has promised to reward Dr Lynham with a senior position should he reclaim the seat for the party on July 19.
“Dr Lynham is one of Queensland’s most respected surgeons. His experience at the coalface of two of Brisbane’s biggest hospitals will be invaluable to the ALP and the Parliament,” Ms Palaszczuk said when she announced his endorsement in April.
“He has also been one of Queensland’s most fervent advocates for action on alcohol-fuelled violence, and I expect him to continue to play a role in that debate in the months ahead.”
But it is understood an official decision on a potential portfolio for Dr Lynham will be made after the by-election result is known.
