Cancer diagnoses in Canberra are expected to grow to more 2500 cases in the next decade, according to a new report predicting the ACT will have the second-highest growth in cancer cases in the country.

The cancer incidence projections released by the Australian Institute of Health and Welfare estimates there will be 2541 new cases of cancer diagnosed in the ACT in 2024.

The report indicates the rate of new cancer cases in the ACT will increase at an average annual rate of 4.4 per cent from 2009 – the second-highest in the country after Western Australia.

There were 1524 cancer cases in the ACT in 2010, with the report predicting cases will rise to 2026 next year, increasing to 2317 by 2020 and 2541 by 2024.
