Westmead Hospital will get $5 million as part of the NSW state budget to kick-start a $1 billion redevelopment.
Tuesday’s NSW budget will contain $5 million to kick-start plans for a $1 billion redevelopment of Westmead Hospital, the government has announced.
But the Health Minister Jillian Skinner has promised to avoid the mistakes that have plagued the redevelopment of Royal North Shore hospital, saying more than 1000 clinicians and health experts have already been consulted.
Stage 1 of the project, which is expected to cost more than $400 million, will begin next year and include a new emergency department and the co-location of services such as radiology, pathology and operating theatres.

The transformation of Westmead, which services a huge population from western Sydney to the far reaches of NSW, will be the centrepiece of the Baird government’s infrastructure plan for western Sydney on Tuesday.
