Shaping up: Health in the workplace is a key aspect of productivity.

Despite the latest OECD Better Life Index showing that 85 per cent of Australians consider themselves in good health, the Randstad Workmonitor reveals more than one fifth (21%) of local workers don’t feel they have enough energy to go to work each day. Aussies also believe there is a strong link between performance in the workplace and staying in shape, with 62 per cent saying the quality of their work benefits when they exercise regularly.

It’s important you find the time to remain fit and active, and you should be open with your employer about the measures you’re taking to do so. While many of us have busy schedules, it’s important we don’t use our jobs as an excuse to let unhealthy habits creep into our lives.

Let your employer know if you are interested in developing a healthy living program at work – whether that is starting a sporting team, setting up a lunchtime running group or joining a gym with colleagues.

Workplaces should see supporting such programs as an opportunity to proactively support their employees’ health. A fit, healthy and happy workforce can have a surprising impact on workplace productivity as well as retention rates, so creating a strong work-life culture in the office, along with actively implementing healthy living programs, should be a focus for businesses in every industry.
