Doctors groups say New South Wales is facing a health budget black hole of almost $200 million because of federal budget cuts and that patient care will suffer as a result. President of the NSW AMA Dr Saxon Smith says hospitals will face the brunt of the cuts. Dr Smith said the biggest concern is whether the state government can find extra money for sub-acute and rehabilitation beds in the upcoming state budget.”Fewer beds will be available,” he said. “Patients will be stuck in emergency departments, and there may not be enough rehabilitation beds available for patients to move out of hospitals.”The State Government needs to find $191 million lost from Federal Government funds as well as 7 per cent growth. “Extra demand on the health system is adding to the pressure.
