A health group warns no-one in the remote APY Lands will visit a doctor if the GP co-payment announced in the federal budget is imposed. The Nganampa Health Council in the remote north-west of South Australia says locals do not have the money to make a $7 co-payment. Medical director Paul Torzillo says the council will not force locals to pay but absorbing the cost might affect its viability and ability to offer vital health programs. “All these programs are dependent on high accessibility and the population accessing the service. Now if that doesn’t happen then the advances that have been made in these areas of Aboriginal health status will certainly be threatened,” he said. Prime Minister Tony Abbott has indicated the Government is open to refining the co-payment plan.
