The owner of a new medical practice in Cardwell says the service will help to alleviate pressure on the town’s only GP and a nearby hospital.

The clinic opened yesterday, housing up to three doctors and will see about 40 patients a day.

Owner Dr Brett Scott says the Tully Hospital is full of patients who could be seeing a general practitioner.

“They offer an excellent service but I’ve had many colleagues over the years who’ve worked at Tully and they’ve discussed with me just how busy it is there and if we can perhaps improve private service delivery there it may help Queensland Health get on with the core business of delivering emergency services and so on,” he said.

“We also have visiting rights at Ingham Hospital so that we have the option of inpatient care as well.

“We share a very good working relationship with Queensland Health, they’ve been excellent.

“So we’re really looking forward to seeing how this model progresses and how it might address some of the health needs in this region.”
