EYE SPECIALISTS WARN AGAINST EYE TATTOOING  #eye #tattoo #ophtolmology

The Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Ophthalmologists (RANZCO) are concerned after viewing a segment during the ABC News on Tuesday 11 March on outrageous body modifications including eye tattooing.

The procedure was explained as tattooing the sclera (white part) of the eye for artistic purposes. Although the body modification artist stated: “I don’t touch the iris or go anywhere near it…” the procedure is extremely dangerous.

Corneal specialist A/Prof Mark Daniell explains the risks. “The eye is a very complex and sensitive organ and in no way should anyone consider tattooing it if they wish to retain their sight over the long term. Infection, pain and potential blindness are all risks. A major concern would also be losing the eye due to penetration of the globe.”

RANZCO warns that body modification artists are not medically trained and should in no way be performing these permanent and potentially vision harming procedures.
