DOCTORS have evoked the image of a child bleeding to death or dying of leukaemia in a feud over new contracts. #qldpol #smoqld #keepourdoctors
In an open letter to the Premier and Health Minister, Queensland Health’s senior medical doctors say it does not need a “miracle of fate” to reverse deadlocked negotiations.
Top-level talks today between three doctors representing the state’s 3000 medical specialists, who are threatening mass resignations over individual contracts, and the Newman Government are again in jeopardy.
It follows a letter from Australian Medical Association president Dr Steve Hambleton to Health Minister Lawrence Springborg expressing doubts.
It is unclear whether Mr Springborg has seen the latest fiery correspondence, which has been circulated on social media.
The SMO’s anonymous open letter urges Premier Campbell Newman and Mr Springborg to stop the “train wreck”.
“Don’t you dare sit there and tell us that this legislation is irreversible,’’ it said. “When you watch a child bleed to death before your eyes as you pump blood in their arm only to see it pour out of the gaping hole in their skull, where it has been sheared off from a motor vehicle accident – that is irreversible.
“When parents beg you to save a child’s life after a second failed bone marrow transplant for leukaemia … that is impossible,” it added.
A spokesman for Mr Springborg said the minister remained confident the talks would proceed in an “even-tempered” fashion.
