Newman’s #WorkChoices Threaten #Doctors’ Wages And Conditions
Shadow Health Minister, Jo-Ann Miller, says the Newman Government has signalled its plans to cut the wages and conditions of the thousands of doctors who are essential to keeping the state’s hospital system running.
“In Question Time in State Parliament today the Premier was given a chance to rule out wage cuts under new Newman’s WorkChoices employment contracts drafted for 4,000 senior doctors now working in Queensland public hospitals,” Mrs Miller said.
“He failed to do so. He could not even guarantee doctors will retain their current wages and conditions.
“It is especially concerning if conditions such as fatigue breaks are removed, meaning doctors will be forced to work long hours for less pay and fewer breaks.
“These Newman WorkChoices contracts enable hospital management to direct doctors to work arbitrary night shifts, to work seven days a week or split shifts.
“Doctors may be required to pick up the workload of another doctor if a hospital ward is short staffed.
“Pushing doctors to breaking point will inevitably lead to poorer quality health care.
“Cost cutting and making public hospitals ‘profitable’ will distress hardworking doctors and harm patients.
“If a doctor speaks out about these issues they can be disciplined or dismissed without any avenue of appeal.
“The changes are due to take effect from July 2014 and given the LNP’s preference for WorkChoices-style contracts, doctors should be bracing for cuts to their wages and conditions,” Mrs Miller said.
